About Zululand on Canvas: the Journey of the Big 6

In June 1993, his famous painting of "Two Birds on a Milk Can" was selected for the back page of the Reader's Digest. Three years later, he was invited to exhibit at the "Washington Square Garden Outdoor Exhibition" and he has also exhibited successfully in Central Park New York, Canada, London and many country-wide exhibitions in South Africa. In 2004, he show cased his work at the Safari Club International Convention in Reno, Nevada and his paintings can now be found in the USA, Europe and Australasia.

In 2009, Joe’s intricate and detailed love affair with wildlife brought him to the pinnacle of an overwhelming dream; to one by one paint a life-size version of the Big 6 creatures of nature in their dimensional glory of original size, strength and colours real enough to inspire admiration. With nothing more than a mixture of paint, gentle outlines and the power to picture, Joe will undertake this long term project to transform a quiet moment in life to the giant canvas of his project – an attainable slice from the bosom of wildlife. One by one, Joe will paint these creatures on their own canvases to highlight the importance of conservation for those to enjoy today and for those unborn to enjoy tomorrow.

Joe’s first project in his series of "Zululand on Canvas" paintings will launch in October 2009 and will be to paint the majestic African elephant on a 3m wide x 5m high canvas. This unbelievable project of jumbo proportions will take an incredible four months to complete, where by Joe’s project can be publically viewed at his host venue the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre in Kwa-Zulu Natal. With the aid of an electric scissor lift, Joe will paint his canvas to dimensional precision and craftsmanship.

Throughout the duration of the project, Joe's progress can be viewed by means of cameras linked to Joe’s venue. Visitors to this website can view the exciting progress of this painting by watching Joe paint his masterpiece - mere paint and design will be brought together by means of Joe’s painting passion and his willingness to make a difference.

Once the painting is completed the "elephant" will be auctioned and the proceeds will be donated to a wildlife conservation trust. The funds from the trust will be utilized in a Zululand-based project for the improvement of animal conservation and awareness. This unique project aims to capture national and international attention; wildlife conservation in an innovative manner with magnetizing proportions, impact and lasting effect.

Russian novelist, Boris Paternak quoted, "Man is born to live, not to prepare for life". Joe Marais understands the magnitude of living his talent by concentrating his passion towards a worthy cause – captivating the imagination of the world without saying a word, one stroke of his paintbrush at a time.

This is your opportunity to get involved in the "Zululand on Canvas" project. We need your support and expertise to help breathe life into Joe Marais’s vision; teamwork is not only a mindset, it is pure dedication with a common goal.

Your support can either be on a monetary basis (we will need funds to market the project), or on an expertise / awareness involvement (as the project needs the right involvement to help sustain the goal of the project).
